The Senior Regional Director for Facilities and Grounds Management is responsible for a wide range of duties with the major duty to inspect and provide the appropriate maintenance of all HVAC systems across the four VCOM campuses and assuring all systems are kept in an optimal state. This position also performs other Facilities Management duties to assist the VP, including but not limited to, oversight of various projects (project management) that occur on campuses from time to time, inspections of facilities and grounds on each of the four VCOM campuses in four states (VA, LA, AL, and SC), reporting any facility and grounds issues to the VP and resolving those that can be addressed during the on-site visits.

Duties also include assisting with the occasional patching and painting of facilities when needed. This position may be called upon at times to assist with set-ups and breakdown for major events . This position assists the VP with inspections from time to time to assure the overall safety and security of the facilities. The person in this position also assists the VP in assuring all building policies are up to date and enforced across the VCOM campuses to assure the quality, continuity, and efﬁciency of college operations with an emphasis on effectiveness and compliance.

Salary Range: $60,000.00 - $90,000.00

Required Qualifications:

Education: Associates degree or higher preferred. A minimum of education and certification in HVAC systems. Education and certification in Facilities Management preferred and/or a plus in consideration.

Experience:

Experience with HVAC systems including installation and repair.
Education and experience in facilities management with ability to monitor multistory facilities on different campuses.
Ability to prioritize and organize work tasks, with attention to detail; ability to work without supervision and make independent decisions.
Ability to identify and perform repairs on several types of electronic and mechanical equipment.
Ability to closely follow procedures and enforce all building policies.
Ability to work as part of a team to include working with supervisor and to work as a supervisor with the goal of ensuring the best quality of customer service is offered.
Ability to gain knowledge of and to apply procedures to meet the laws and requirements for Higher Education that are related to Campus Operations and Safety

Attendees are invited to share their research in poster format. Poster abstracts must be accepted for the event for posters to be displayed. The abstract submission form and a guide for writing research abstracts for posters are linked below. All posters will be on display during the event. In addition, the VCOM Research Recognition Day features an optional poster competition with distinct categories: Research by faculty members, residents and fellows, medical students, graduate students, and undergraduate students in the research disciplines of biomedical, clinical, education and simulation, and community and public health. In addition, there are two case report categories for residents and fellows, and medical students.

What will this conference offer?

The Via Research Recognition Day is a forum for health professionals and scientists at academic institutions, teaching hospitals and practice sites to present or benefit from new research innovations and programs intended to improve the health of all humans. By attending the sessions with the speakers, participants will have the opportunity to learn cutting edge information in the physiological bases of osteopathic manipulative therapy efficacy, new trends in physician-based research networks, and how to develop innovative research projects with high impact for human health. By attending the poster session, participants will also learn about the biomedical, clinical and educational research activities at VCOM and its partner institutions and will have ample opportunity to identify new collaborative research opportunities.

Who should attend?

Physicians, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, public health professionals, medical residents, health professions students and others interested in primary care issues and research.

On Sept.24, the VCOM–Virginia hosted the inaugural event in its Community Outreach Research and Education (CORE) symposium series, “Expanding Holistic Health with Community Partnerships.” The symposium brought together healthcare providers, public officials, law enforcement, social service professionals, and community leaders to explore collaborative approaches to improving health outcomes across rural and underserved communities in Southwest Virginia.

The key to the symposium is osteopathic medicine’s emphasis on treating the whole patient. Health is impacted by a host of factors, including socioeconomic status, access to community support and transportation, stability of housing, food insecurity, and more. The work of the community partners who participated in the symposium is focused on many of these issues.

The event opened with remarks from Noelle Bissell, MD, director of the New River Valley Health District, whose presentation, “Our NRV Home and Community Impact,” set the tone for the day. Dr. Bissell emphasized that effective healthcare requires partnerships that extend beyond traditional medical settings. Physicians and community groups must meet people where they are—physically, culturally, and emotionally. She highlighted the importance of understanding how everyday circumstances affect health, investing in prevention, and creating lasting systems of support that help people make healthy decisions.

The keynote address was delivered by Michael R. Kramer, PhD, professor of social epidemiology and director of the Center for Rural Health at Mercer University School of Medicine. His work employs data visualization and spatial analysis tools to identify regions of greatest need and inform targeted interventions that reduce chronic and complex health conditions. In his address, Dr. Kramer discussed the importance of understanding how early life experiences and community conditions shape long-term health outcomes. The heart of the symposium, however, was the student research showcase. Second-year VCOM medical students presented findings from their period of service and group research projects conducted through the CORE Program, which connected students with 18 community-based organizations (CBOs) across Southwest Virginia. The student posters highlighted innovative, evidence-based approaches to pressing local challenges such as food insecurity, homelessness, trauma and addiction recovery, maternal and child health, fundraising, and access to care.

These projects not only provided valuable insights for community partners, but also fostered opportunities for collaboration among organizations working toward shared goals. As one student reflected, “Serving in the community has changed the way I see medicine—it’s not just about treating illness, it’s about being present and understanding people’s lives.”

The CORE Program—co-directed by Bernard Kadio, MD, PhD, MPH, VCOM-Virginia’s chair of preventive medicine, and Jess Nicholson, MAT, MPH(c), VCOM’s director of community outreach and public health—is part of VCOM’s commitment to community-engaged learning. Each CORE team of students partners with a local organization to co-develop research questions, collect and analyze data, and translate findings into actionable solutions that will directly benefit the community.

This was the first year of the CORE model, part of VCOM’s preventative medicine curriculum. In future years, new cohorts of student doctors will continue and expand upon the work of previous teams—creating sustained partnerships and long-term impact with the CBOs.

Reflecting on the day’s success, Nicholson shared, “Opportunities like this matter because they shape our students into the kind of physicians we all hope for: compassionate, community-minded, and aware of the bigger picture of health.”

Blacksburg councilman Liam Watson echoed the sentiment: “The symposium was fantastic—I only wish more people could have experienced it. I’m excited to share the incredible work being done by [VCOM] students and these organizations.”

Through CORE, VCOM continues to strengthen its role as both an educational institution and a community partner—building bridges between medicine, public health, and local organizations to create healthier, more resilient communities.

Step inside one of VCOM’s Simulation and Technology Centers, and you’ll find some of the most dynamic spaces on all four campuses. Here, classrooms transform into high-energy, hands-on training labs where students practice life-saving skills, engage with standardized patients, and respond to high-fidelity manikin-based simulations, all under the guidance of experienced physician educators.

These centers aren’t just about mastering medical procedures—they’re about shaping future physicians who embody humanism, professionalism, and sound clinical judgment.

Simulation-based training has emerged as one of the most transformative developments in modern medical education, giving students the opportunity to learn through experience in a safe, controlled setting. VCOM’s Sim Centers are at the forefront of this movement, continually expanding hands-on opportunities for students to refine their technical and decision-making skills before they ever step into a hospital.

Through the use of high-fidelity manikins, standardized patients, and case-based scenarios, students gain confidence and competence while receiving real-time feedback. This immersive learning model enhances skill acquisition, reduces errors, and allows repeated practice without risk to actual patients, making simulation an indispensable tool in medical education.

Of course, innovation doesn’t come without challenges. Cost, equipment maintenance, and the need for skilled instructors are constant considerations. Yet, VCOM’s Simulation Centers continue to thrive by meeting these challenges head-on through creative, homegrown solutions.

Since their beginnings in 2003 with a single simulation room on the Virginia campus, the centers have expanded to include fully equipped facilities at each of VCOM’s four campuses. Each site houses multipurpose simulation rooms, clinical exam rooms, and advanced technology designed to mirror real-world medical environments. The centers also serve as training partners for outside institutions and healthcare organizations seeking innovative, high-quality educational experiences.

What truly sets VCOM’s Sim Centers apart, however, is the ingenuity of the people behind them. Faculty, staff, and students collaborate to design and build their own training tools, which are tailored to the specific needs of the curriculum and are often more affordable than commercial models.

One notable example is the in-house development of synthetic organs, multicultural skin materials, and anatomical parts. At the Virginia campus, student interns tackled the high cost and fragility of commercial airway trainers by designing and 3D-printing durable, low-cost laryngoscopes. These custom creations not only save money but also serve other departments, such as anatomy, which can request specialty models to enhance their own programs.

Another groundbreaking innovation is VCOM’s wearable trainer technology. Beginning with a lumbar injection trainer, the team has also developed a prototype for a wearable knee model that allows students to perform sutures, injections, and manipulations directly on standardized patients or peers. Made from soft, flexible materials that replicate the feel of human tissue, these wearable models bring realism and patient communication to life, bridging the gap between simulation and real-world practice.

The cost savings are just as impressive as the educational value. While commercial knee models can cost more than $4,000 and have limited use, VCOM’s 3D-printed versions are a fraction of the price and feature modular, replaceable parts. The centers also produce their own synthetic skin squares for suturing and injection training, enabling unlimited, low-risk practice for every student.

Beyond these custom innovations, each center features advanced, high-fidelity simulation technology. Manikins that breathe, blink, bleed, and respond to treatment allow students to manage conditions ranging from cardiac arrest and trauma to childbirth and stroke.

The simulated hospital and exam rooms are designed to mirror actual clinical environments and are fully equipped with cameras and microphones to assess student performance. After each exercise, students participate in structured debriefings with faculty, supported by VCOM’s proprietary Via Voice Recognition Technology, which evaluates the accuracy of medical terminology and communication.

At its core, VCOM’s Simulation and Technology Centers put into practice what we know about learning: Students learn best by doing. Within these centers, mistakes become lessons, and every challenge is an opportunity to grow.

Geriatric Physician Loan Forgiveness

Established in 2005, the Geriatric Physician Loan Forgiveness Program was created to encourage physicians who are completing, or have completed, fellowships in geriatrics and/or geriatric psychiatry to practice in South Carolina by helping them repay their medical school debt. (South Carolina 43-21-200)

In exchange for the commitment to practice geriatric medicine in South Carolina for at least five years, eligible doctors selected by the Geriatric Physician Loan Forgiveness Advisory Board receive $35,000 to repay their medical school debt.
The Geriatric Physician Loan Advisory Board is composed of a representative from: the Medical University of South Carolina; the Medical University of the University of South Carolina; the South Carolina Commission on Higher Education; the South Carolina Medical Association and; a physician who has previously received the award.
The Geriatric Physician Loan Forgiveness Program was the first loan forgiveness program for geriatricians in the nation.

The Commonwealth of Virginia (the Commonwealth) currently participates in the Health Resources and Services Administration, Bureau of Clinician Recruitment and Service (BCRS) Grants to States for Loan Repayment. This VA-SLRP is operated by the Virginia Department of Health-Office of Health Equity (VDH-OHE) providing an incentive to qualified medical, nursing, dental, behavioral health, and pharmaceutical (pharmacists) professionals in return for a minimum of two (2) years of service at an eligible practice site in one of the federally designated Health Professional Shortage Areas (HPSAs) in a qualified field of practice in Virginia. VA-SLRP requires a dollar-for-dollar match from the community/Commonwealth of Virginia. The Commonwealth of Virginia will now pay the full match for eligible applicants who are selected by the advisory committee. The maximum award for a four (4) year commitment is $140,000 and shall be for a qualifying educational loan. After the application deadline, a thorough review is conducted in order of the application receipt date to determine initial eligibility; an advisory committee determines final eligibility. Priority VA-SLRP awards are given based on the HPSA scores for counties/cities/populations in Virginia and HRSA requirements, as well as the scoring rubric for equitable distribution. All approvals are based on the availability of funds. The participant shall meet and fulfill all requirements to be eligible for the VA-SLRP.
