Nestled inside the Boykin Recreation Center, the new War Eagle Wellness Clinic is more than just a place for check-ups and screenings—it’s a hub where learning, service, and community care come together. Its mission is clear: to provide accessible, compassionate healthcare while preparing the next generation of medical professionals for lives of service.

What makes this clinic unique is its team. Students from Auburn University’s Harrison College of Pharmacy, the College of Nursing and Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine (VCOM)-Auburn join forces to deliver care. They’re not just studying healthcare; they’re practicing it, shoulder-to-shoulder with the community they one day hope to serve.

The clinic celebrated its official launch in early August with a free blood pressure education event. Community members came to learn about management strategies, nutrition, and the importance of prevention—and they left with more than just information. They left knowing they were part of something bigger: a shared effort to build a healthier Auburn.

“It was truly meaningful to see so many faces come together with a shared commitment to health and community,” the clinic’s organizers shared. “We couldn’t have asked for a better start, and we’re thankful for every single person who made it possible.”

The War Eagle Wellness Clinic is just getting started. With more events and services planned, its future is filled with opportunities to learn, grow, and most importantly—serve.

Job Summary:

The Director of ��TV - Auburn Campus is responsible for the administration of the entire admissions process on the Auburn Campus. This position is also responsible for the direct recruitment of prospective students through speaking engagements, personal contacts, and special presentations. The Director will develop and implement recruiting strategies in Alabama and the surrounding states directed towards pre-health undergraduate and/or graduate students. The director will manage the Ambassador program for the Auburn Campus. The Director will manage and coordinate all interview days, open houses, and, if needed, general information sessions. Establish and maintain professional contacts with pre-health advisors and association representatives. The Director is tasked with reviewing and screening all applications eligible for interview at the Auburn Campus, and processing and maintaining confidential student records. The Director will also act as Administrative Chair on the ��TV Committee. The Director of ��TV for the Auburn Campus is responsible for the supervision of the ��TV Coordinator.

Salary Range: $59,000 - $66,000

Required Qualifications:

Education: Bachelor’s Degree or above required

Licensure or certification: Valid Driver’s License

Experience: Experience in higher education in admission or students affairs is desired.

Beyond the Smoke: VCOM-Auburn Medical Students Dive into Teen Tobacco Awareness

At the Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine–Auburn (VCOM-Auburn), medical students are learning to serve communities long before they graduate. One student-led project is taking on the challenge of teen tobacco and vaping use by assessing awareness and laying the groundwork for prevention efforts in Alabama schools.

A passionate group of students at VCOM-Auburn set out to explore what Alabama high school students know and don’t know about the dangers of tobacco and vaping. What began as a research assignment quickly evolved into a broader mission—to inform public health education and improve adolescent health outcomes.

Led by VCOM-Auburn students Rachael Hildebrand, Jennifer Friery, Emeri Nosal, and Peter Ern—and guided by Mayra Rodriguez, PhD, chair for public health—the project was titled “Examining Awareness of Adverse Effects of Tobacco Use and Assessing Current Tobacco Use Among Alabama Teens.” With support from Beauregard High School educators Erik Goldmann and Richard Brown, the team designed a study to connect classroom learning with real-world public health impact.

From Curiosity to Community Engagement

The students began with a comprehensive literature review, exploring national trends in adolescent tobacco use and examining the latest data on youth perceptions of vaping. After obtaining IRB approval and developing a custom survey, they launched their initial data collection in Mr. Goldmann’s health professional class.

The early findings revealed a promising trend—many students reported they had never used tobacco products and expressed little interest in trying them. They also recognized the addictive nature of both cigarettes and e-cigarettes. However, the survey also showed significant gaps in understanding about the contents of e-cigarettes and their long-term health effects.

Motivated by these results, the team expanded the project to include all students in grades 9 through 12 at Beauregard High School, transforming their project from a classroom study into a school-wide health initiative.

Expanding the Vision

The VCOM-Auburn students presented their initial findings at VCOM Research Day, but they aren’t stopping there. Their next goal is to expand the project to additional high schools in Lee County and eventually across Alabama, creating a broader understanding of where educational efforts are most needed.

"Our goal from the start was simple—see what teens know and what they still need to learn," said one VCOM-Auburn researcher. "By identifying these knowledge gaps, we can be part of a much bigger solution that empowers students to make informed choices."

Preparing Future Physicians, Promoting Public Health

This project highlights how VCOM-Auburn students are preparing not only to become skilled physicians but also public health advocates. With support from their faculty mentor and local school leaders, they’re addressing a pressing health issue—tobacco use among youth—through evidence-based research and community engagement.

As the project grows, the message remains clear: Effective prevention begins with education, and meaningful education starts by understanding what students need to know most.

Medical students at VCOM enhance their skills in providing patient centered medicine through medical outreach activities in the Appalachian region. From the time they begin their medical education, VCOM students are actively involved in local area health fairs, free clinics, community education, and other service-based learning opportunities to engage with the community, all while receiving instruction from experienced faculty and staff.

VCOM students participate in weekly Interprofessional Early Clinical Experiences, or IECEs, throughout their second year of medical school. During these experiences, students work alongside faculty mentors and allied healthcare professionals including nurses, pharmacists, EMS personnel, athletic trainers, and others. This practical experience helps to prepare second-year medical students for the team approach to medical care and for their third-year core clinical rotations.

Community outreach programs include:

Health and wellness programs for community events
Outreach programs to rescue missions and remote communities

Auburn Campus Summer Enrichment Experience

Auburn SEE camp offers a diverse range of interactive learning activities designed to engage students while introducing them to the fields of science and healthcare.

As part of their Appalachian Outreach and IECE training, VCOM students assist faculty in hosting “Mini-Medical Schools” promoting healthy behaviors and providing a glimpse at what it’s like to be a medical student for rural high school students. VCOM students supervised by faculty host mini med school to promote healthy behaviors in youth, to prevent at-risk behaviors, and to provide a glimpse of what it is like to be a medical student for high school students.

STEM Opportunities for Youth

VCOM students and faculty provide STEM programs to local schools where VCOM students share their experience with students from rural and disadvantaged backgrounds. And sharing these experiences promotes interest in healthcare careers.

Through Appalachian Outreach, VCOM students gain experience in public and environmental health, as well as providing care for patients who live in poor socioeconomic conditions. Medical outreach experiences are a key component in educating students to provide healthcare in challenging environments.
