The position provides the oversight of the Simulation and Technology Center’s state of the art simulators, high fidelity mannequins, and laboratories and the implementation of the educational programs utilizing the technology within the Center for medical student resident, allied health and physician education.

The positions prime directive is to functionalize the simulated curriculum with goal of improving measurable participant outcomes. All simulated curriculums will have predefined measurable metrics to support the educational return on resource allocation.

The position requires knowledge of technology to support a vast array of high-fidelity simulators and information systems, the educational expertise to support a full range of teaching methods, and the organizational skills to conduct educational sessions for large groups of students and residents.

The position encompasses organizing and implementation the portion of the medical student curriculum that requires High-Fidelity/High-Technology (HF/HT), virtual, cadaver, and procedural simulation with input from the Associate Dean and specific faculty who provide their specific medical/clinical expertise.

The position requires continued participation in educational programs to assure both support and understanding of the skills required to maintain expertise in an evolving simulation-based education in healthcare and to improve the clinical skills of all learners in a simulated setting tat will lead to improved patient outcomes and/or safety in the clinical setting. The position requires leadership in both simulation and education and management skills.

The position is a part of an innovative team led by the Associate Dean for Simulation and Technology.

Medical school is an incredibly demanding journey. Over four years, future physicians dive deep into understanding the human body, disease processes, trauma care, and healing. While students spend countless hours in lectures, labs, and study groups, their families are often navigating stress, financial pressures, career decisions, and emotional challenges of their own. During this time, support and understanding can make all the difference for both medical students and their families.

The Student Advocates Association (SAA) is a national, nonprofit organization that supports and educates the spouses and partners of students studying osteopathic medicine. Chapters provide connection, friendship, and shared support to those navigating the medical school journey alongside a student. SAA chapters are affiliated with and work closely with medical schools like VCOM.

Members of SAA plan various educational and social programs for its members as well as fundraisers for students and the College. In addition, members are often involved in community planning and philanthropy projects that support local children and non-profit organizations.

Traditionally, SAA has welcomed student spouses and significant others; however, in recent years, parents and other family members have also joined, expanding the network of encouragement and advocacy. Every voice matters, and every supporter plays a role.

The SAA also maintains a direct connection with the Advocates for the American Osteopathic Association (AAOA), a national organization that promotes and supports the osteopathic profession. Together, SAA and AAOA work to educate others about the values and history of osteopathic medicine, and they often have fun doing it, too. Local SAA chapters may also partner with other community groups to enhance their advocacy and outreach efforts.

Joining the Local Chapter

The SAA at VCOM-Louisiana welcomes student supporters! The group will host monthly meetings, with refreshments and childcare available (reservations required). For those who can't attend in person, a virtual option will also be offered to ensure everyone can stay connected and involved.

Annual dues are just $20 per person. Officers will be elected, and planning for the year will begin soon. They look forward to building a supportive, welcoming community together.

This past December, the Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine (VCOM)-Louisiana received a gift with long-term impact, two mobile medical units designed to expand healthcare access throughout Northeast Louisiana. Delivered in partnership with the Ouachita Parish Police Jury, these units represent a major step toward bringing medical services directly to rural and underserved communities. But like any meaningful gift, the true value comes not just from unwrapping it, but from learning how to use it.

To ensure the units can be safely and effectively used for future community care, a team of faculty and staff participated in hands-on training this July, learning every detail necessary to roll out these clinics for service.

The two custom-built units are equipped for real-world healthcare delivery. Each features private exam rooms with diagnostic equipment, clinical workspaces, phlebotomy stations, lavatories, and, in the larger unit, a wheelchair-accessible lift. Adorned with bold VCOM-Louisiana branding and images of local students, the mobile clinics stand as a visual promise of outreach and opportunity.

These mobile medical units are a powerful extension of our mission. They not only help bring care to areas that often go without, but they also give our students vital, hands-on experience in real-world outreach. This recent training was an important step to ensure we're ready to take these clinics into the field. When our students learn to serve with both skill and compassion, it’s our communities that benefit—with care that meets them right where they are.

While they have not yet been deployed for patient care, the mobile units are intended to offer services such as preventative screenings, primary and geriatric care, immunizations, and disaster relief. They will also serve as an essential extension of VCOM’s educational mission, providing students with the opportunity to engage directly with the community through hands-on outreach once operations are fully underway.

To prepare for that next step, VCOM-Louisiana collaborated with Mission Mobile Medical, The Mobile Healthcare Company, for a comprehensive two-day training session led by instructor Troy Watson. Participants received a comprehensive introduction to the clinics, both inside and out. They explored generators, electronic systems, and clinical equipment and learned to safely drive, maneuver, and park the large vehicles, including techniques for navigating tight spaces and practicing defensive driving.

Reflecting on the training at VCOM-Louisiana, Watson added, “What stood out most to me during the training was how committed your team was to understanding every part of the mobile clinic, not just the ‘how,’ but the ‘why’ behind each step. Y’all came in with the right mindset: curious, focused, and ready to get hands-on. That kind of attitude makes a big difference, especially in mobile healthcare, where flexibility and attention to detail really matter. It was clear your team takes pride in doing things right and serving others well.”

Darryl Dozier, director for facilities at VCOM-Louisiana, remarked, "This training gave me the hands-on skills to set up and transport mobile medical units safely. If they don't reach the communities that need them, they can't make an impact. I'm now better prepared to help deliver care where it's needed most. I would especially like to assist in disaster-affected areas in the future.”

Additional participants highlighted the value of the training. Dr. Christopher Clark, an assistant professor of family medicine and osteopathic manipulative medicine, shared, “The most valuable part of the experience was being trained by a professional who lives and breathes mobile medical units. It was great to hear the insight from the professional instructor as well as the one-on-one training he provided when operating the large vehicles. This has given me the confidence to drive the vehicles out into the community. The training allowed me not only to see inside the vehicles but also to explore areas that I might have missed during my first observation outside the vehicle. I hope the mobile medical units help provide students with real-life medical experience by interacting with patients in the community.”

Ethan Terral, application services specialist and admission recruiter, also appreciated the opportunity to get behind the wheel. “Since I am not a doctor, I will not be using most of the features of the mobile units, but it's nice to know that I can help our doctors and community by being able to drive our mobile units safely. Getting VCOM’s name into our community with the mobile units will be an exciting achievement that I look forward to assisting with.”

As VCOM-Louisiana looks ahead, the mobile medical units stand ready, poised to become a powerful tool for community health, student education, and regional connection. When the wheels hit the road this fall for patient care, the training will have laid a strong foundation for future outreach. With preparation, purpose, and a deep commitment to service, VCOM is poised to deliver compassionate, high-quality care directly to those who need it most, one mile, one community, and one patient at a time.

��TV (VCOM) continues to strengthen its commitment to identifying and preparing students who are aligned with its mission to serve rural and medically underserved populations. A recent articulation agreement with Centenary College, a selective liberal arts college in Shreveport, Louisiana, enhances this effort by offering eligible Centenary students preferred admission to VCOM.

This new agreement builds on an existing partnership formed in 2021, which guaranteed interviews for qualified Centenary students. Under the expanded agreement, Centenary students who meet the criteria can receive preferred admission to VCOM as early as the end of their sophomore year. To be eligible, students must meet all technical and general admission requirements, complete a set of required prerequisite courses, and maintain an overall science and cumulative GPA of 3.7. They’re also required to perform community and volunteer service.

In addition, the new agreement allows Centenary pre-med students who have achieved a 3.7 GPA in the appropriate courses at Centenary to waive VCOM’s MCAT requirement. Students with a GPA above 3.4 who are recommended by the school will have the opportunity to interview, though the MCAT requirement remains.

Centenary alumnae Colbee Duke, Rose Deshler, and Cassandra Halford are current students at VCOM-Louisiana who entered under the previous agreement. Duke, who is on track to graduate with the Class of 2026, credits Centenary with preparing her for medical school. “Centenary was the perfect stepping stone for my journey to VCOM,” she said. “It helped me grow into an independent student capable of critical thinking and problem solving—essential qualities in medicine.”

Halford, a member of the Class of 2027, shared how both institutions helped shape her medical journey. “Centenary as well as the STEM professors prepared me for the fast-paced, intense nature of medical school. When I was looking into an osteopathic school, the principle of self-healing through osteopathic manipulative medicine (OMM) appealed to the holistic approach that I was interested in. OMM is absolutely my favorite part of an osteopathic education because we are taught techniques that facilitate the body's ability to maintain and regulate itself.”

Deshler, who will graduate from VCOM-Louisiana in 2028, added that VCOM’s mission played a major role in her decision to apply. “Early on, I was unsure if I wanted to pursue medical school. However, during my time at Centenary, VCOM was introduced to me more than once, and it played a significant role in shaping my decision to become a physician,” Deshler says. “VCOM stood out for its global outreach and commitment to service.”

Scott Chirhart, dean of the School of Health Sciences at Centenary, emphasized the urgent need for physicians in the region. “By 2030, Louisiana is projected to be among the top three states facing the most severe physician shortages,” he said. “This partnership helps recruit high-achieving students into a program designed to serve those who need care most, fulfilling not only personal ambition but a shared commitment to public impact.”

Dr. Tooke-Rawlins noted that: “At VCOM, our mission has always been to prepare community-focused physicians who will serve in rural and medically underserved areas. This partnership with Centenary College reflects that commitment. By identifying and mentoring students early in their academic journey, we’re creating a pathway for passionate future physicians to return to and serve the communities that need them most in Louisiana. Our Centenary alumni have proven to be high-achieving and successful medical students, and we look forward to welcoming more like them in the future.”

Medical students at VCOM enhance their skills in providing patient centered medicine through medical outreach activities in the Appalachian region. From the time they begin their medical education, VCOM students are actively involved in local area health fairs, free clinics, community education, and other service-based learning opportunities to engage with the community, all while receiving instruction from experienced faculty and staff.

VCOM students participate in weekly Interprofessional Early Clinical Experiences, or IECEs, throughout their second year of medical school. During these experiences, students work alongside faculty mentors and allied healthcare professionals including nurses, pharmacists, EMS personnel, athletic trainers, and others. This practical experience helps to prepare second-year medical students for the team approach to medical care and for their third-year core clinical rotations.

Community outreach programs include:

Preventive Medicine Community Outreach (PMCO), wellness screenings for local communities
Free Clinics
Mini Med Schools
Health and wellness programs for community events
Outreach programs to rescue missions and remote communities

VCOM-Louisiana Mobile Medical Outreach

VCOM-Louisiana proudly launched two new mobile clinics to serve Northeast Louisiana in partnership with the Ouachita Parish Police Jury. By bringing medical care directly to those in need, these mobile units represent a lasting investment in the region’s well-being, ensuring that even the most remote populations receive the healthcare they deserve.

As part of their Appalachian Outreach and IECE training, VCOM students assist faculty in hosting “Mini-Medical Schools” promoting healthy behaviors and providing a glimpse at what it’s like to be a medical student for rural high school students. VCOM students supervised by faculty host mini med school to promote healthy behaviors in youth, to prevent at-risk behaviors, and to provide a glimpse of what it is like to be a medical student for high school students.

STEM Opportunities for Youth

VCOM students and faculty provide STEM programs to local schools where VCOM students share their experience with students from rural and disadvantaged backgrounds. And sharing these experiences promotes interest in healthcare careers.

Through Appalachian Outreach, VCOM students gain experience in public and environmental health, as well as providing care for patients who live in poor socioeconomic conditions. Medical outreach experiences are a key component in educating students to provide healthcare in challenging environments.
